Governments and industries are setting out great ambitions for the introduction of hydrogen as an energy carrier in the coming decades. Last year the European Commission presented plans to have 40 GW electrolyser capacity installed by 2030 and another 40 GW installed in regions with low-cost renewable electricity to produce hydrogen for the European market. As a sign of the growing commitment, these targets are already being replaced by even more ambitious goals.  What does this mean for the glass industry? Is it an option to replace natural gas with hydrogen? Where would the hydrogen come from? What would it cost? Although final answers are difficult to give in such a rapidly evolving world, the presentation will address these aspects from the point of view of an expert in green hydrogen production.

Asli Firat*, (Şişecam | Turkey)

Sustainability approaches in the design, production, and post-consumption phases are crucial for all stakeholders. Glass, being one of the materials that have changed the history of humanity, enables innovative and sustainable solutions for many sectors and promises endless potential in creating a sustainable future. The scientific, technological, and economic significance of glass is critical to meeting the challenges of current climate change and developing an equitable and sustainable society. Operating in the glass and chemicals sectors, we are aware of our responsibilities in transforming lives with our products. We have a commitment to our stakeholders under our Sustainability Strategy “CareforNext”  where we aim to leave no one behind, not only our customers but also our suppliers, business partners, employees, and society.  As consumer awareness of sustainability and natural resources increases day by day, we are adding more sustainable products to our portfolio with the aim of shifting from green to genuine with sustainable products.
