Glass is one of the most transformative materials of all time. It has played a major role in advancing human civilization throughout the recorded history through its contributions in a wide variety of fields including arts, architecture, communication, medicine, and transportation. It has also enabled significant advances in various branches of science and provides an exceptionally versatile platform for developing innumerable technical applications. For all these reasons, glass is and will continue to be an indispensable material for humanity.   In this lecture we will focus on the vital role of glass as an enabler of sustainable growth. To that end, we will discuss several important applications to highlight the role of glass in enabling renewable energy generation, energy savings,   fuel savings, and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
